Installing a new ceiling light, isn't usually a difficult process. Applying a little common sense, with a little bit of do-it-yourself handyman practices, can make this task even easier. Let's start with some electrical fixture basics and try to get you through this task as quickly as possible.

The first thing that you're going to want to do and this is the most important, is to make sure that the electricity they shut off, to the light fixture that you are about to be working on. Most of the time, this would simply require making sure that the light switch that operates the ceiling fixture, is turned to the off position.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

The good thing about ceiling lights, is that they aren't going to have any moving parts in them, like a ceiling fan. You will be able to remove the old ceiling fixture, to see how easy the wiring from the house, to the light fixture, actually is.

Now you can remove the old light fixture, paying attention to how it is wired to the home. You will notice that there are three wires, unless the home is older, you will have two wires. You will have a black and the white wire and some homes will have a ground wire which will be an exposed copper wire or a green colored grounding wire.

As long as the electricity is off, you will not get electrocuted. However if you do get shocked, and the electricity, is off, you've probably got a problem with your electrical system. Just a simple heads up, always be careful when working with electricity.

Most light fixture boxes in your ceilings are a standard size and this shouldn't be a problem, when you go to buy your new light fixture. After you have purchased your new light fixture and it is ready to install, make sure that you read the assembly instructions and understand them.

Now the process is basically going to be reversing itself. Remember how you removed the old light fixture and you will be reversing these steps to install your new one.

Following the directions, is always going to be helpful, if you've never installed a light fixture before. There are also some great home repair books that can help with this process. If you're short on funds or lacking the money to purchase any books, go down to your local library and see what kind of books they have on home repairs and home improvement.

How To Find The Right Lamp Or Ceiling Light Fixture For Your Child's Bedroom

Before hitting the closest lighting retail outlet in search of the perfect child lamp or ceiling light fixture for your child's bedroom you need to first become familiar with the basic concepts of effective lighting. In any kid room you need to consider ambient, task and accent lighting.

Ambient light is the kind of light that fills the whole room. Be sure to add a sufficient amount of ambient light for the safety and comfort of your child. A ceiling light fixture is a great source of ambient light.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

Task lighting is the kind of lighting that brightens a particular area. Such lighting is ideal for desktop use as it doesn't cause glare and eyestrain. A decorative child lamp is most often ideal for both desktop and bedside use.

Accent lighting should be ideally situated to add to the room's comfort level. It is purely decorative in nature and can be used to highlight treasured accessories.

In an infant nursery situation lighting is just as valuable to the parents as it is to the newborn. Since you'll be spending a considerable amount of time in your baby's room it's important that you have an effective ceiling light fixture as well as a decorative child lamp or two that gives off sufficient light. Such light is important when it comes to changing your baby or reading stories.

A dimmer switch is another good feature to have in a kid room. Such a switch allows you to brighten the room when required and then lower the light at bedtime.

The safest kinds of ambient light fixtures to use in your child's room are wall scones, recessed fixtures and track lighting. The advantage here is that these types of fixtures won't get damaged if your kids start rough housing whereas another type of child lamp may. Also keeping any light sources out of your child's reach is always a good way to prevent burns.

A ceiling light fixture is an ideal alternative as you never have to worry about lamps being knocked over.

For the rooms of younger kids consider general ambient lighting that comes from a ceiling light fixture. Over time you can add localized task lighting into the mix as your child begins using her room for more refined activities like reading or arts and crafts.

Now let's move from the benefits of a ceiling light fixture to that of the child lamp.

When it comes to selecting a child lamp for a desktop consider one that not only compliments the décor of the room but is angled in such away that it avoids unnecessary stress on your child's vision. Positioning a child lamp so it shines directly on your child's desk or work area can cause glare and eyestrain.

Before purchasing a child lamp be sure to look for one's that won't tip easily, produce too much heat or is too heavy in the event that your child does manage to knock or pull it off her desk or table top.

A good child lamp is well-balanced and able to be fastened securely onto a desk.

If your child has a computer in her room, you'll want to ensure that she has ambient as well as task lighting that's compatible. The trick here is to use task lighting to illuminate what is on the monitor and use an ambient light source to eliminate any contrast.

If your child likes to read in bed consider an adjustable child lamp near her bedpost. What better way to encourage your children to wind down their day than to read? Reading will become more appealing to your child if you make the experience as comfortable as possible.

If you wish to place a child lamp next to the bed make sure it lines up with your child's shoulder when she's sitting up ready to read. Lighting that comes from behind her shoulder and slightly to the side will be the best for her eyes.

Ceiling Light Fixtures: Types and Uses

Ever since the caveman decided to hold a lit tree branch above his head, people have known that overhead lighting is the most effective source of ambient/general illumination. In nearly every home, ceiling light fixtures are a staple; they have evolved over the years to suit a wide variety of room lighting purposes. Here, we've listed the most common types of ceiling light fixtures, and their best uses.

Chandeliers. Defined as hanging lights with many extending "arms," chandeliers are a classic ceiling light fixture choice. Once reserved for the formal dining room, chandeliers are making their way into all corners of the home, from kids' rooms to master bathrooms! Pendants. Unlike chandeliers, pendants typically consist of a single light source (a fabric or glass covering over the bulb(s). They are more contemporary and less formal than chandeliers, and gaining popularity in the foyer, dining room, and countless other areas throughout the home. Flush Mounts: These ceiling light fixtures install flush to the ceiling, making them an ideal option for rooms with low ceilings, or tight areas with doors that would bump into a lower hanging light. Besides being among the simplest to install (especially if the space is already wired), they're among the most versatile lights. They aren't ideal for larger spaces, however; be sure to find one with plenty of wattage and supplement with sconces or lamps. Semi-Flush Mounts: Extending below the ceiling, semi-flush lights provide a more widespread illumination than flush mounts because light is able to escape through the bottom and the top of the globe. They tend to be a little pricier than the former, but are often available in elegant designs that rival the formality of a chandelier (and make quite a statement). Consider using semi-flush lights for spaces that are too small for a fancy chandelier, but still require that special decorative touch (like hallways or small home entryways). Track Lighting. One of the most practical ceiling light fixtures, track lighting is technically a type of semi-flush with multiple, adjustable heads. Track lighting is an ideal choice for large spaces like the kitchen or living room (especially modern surroundings), letting you position the light to shine where you need it the most. Ceiling Fans. More and more homeowners are replacing basic ceiling lights with ceiling fans for enhanced home value and comfort. Most ceiling fans today have the option to add a light kit, making them extremely practical for almost any room.

Brightness: You would want a bright bathroom that lets you see every corner clearly. To cite one practical example, would you not hate to shave in a bathroom that is not bright enough? So make sure that you have lamp shade glasses that permit sufficient light to flow through mounted on your ceiling. Single versus multiple lights: In case you are in love with a light with a shade that does not permit too much light penetration, you may want to consider installing multiple lights. That way, you shall still be able to have a shade that you love, and yet have sufficient brightness in spite of relatively darker light shades. Positions of installation: The bathroom ceiling light installations must be able to provide you with sufficient brightness at all the places in the bathroom. So you may want to install a light above the wash basin looking glass, one near the bath tub and one near the toilet. Or, you may want to share lighting between the toilet and the bath tub and thus work with two ceiling lights rather than three. It is not advisable to compromise with the basin-top lighting. Color of lights: Select lights of either white or bright yellow color. Any other light would not let you understand the true color of things and thus may be disturbing and may stress your eyes. As you see now, installing bathroom ceiling lights in an effective manner does need some thought rather than mindless placing. Make sure that you do apply the thoughts before you perform the actual installation for best results.

Pendant lights: These work very well in the kitchen area; particularly, when used atop the kitchen island or even in the study when affixed right above the desk. Pendant lights are usually rectangular and suspended through the help of thin chains on the side which are attached to the ceiling. They provide just the right amount of illumination in a specific area of the room.

Chandeliers: These classical lighting fixtures evince an air of sheer beauty, elegance and timeless appeal. Chandeliers are available in an assortment of designs and even colors; from crystals to colored acrylics; you are sure to find a chandelier to suit your taste and budget. They can be made from wood, wrought iron, brass or other metals; since they have the provision to fix multiple bulbs, they can provide a lot of illumination. Chandeliers are well suited for large rooms and even the foyer. You could also use them in the living room, right above the central seating arrangement or in the corner atop a decorative item such as a sculpture.

Recessed lights: These lights look fantastic if you are going for the soft glowing look in the room. You can use soft white or yellow bulbs in these fixtures for the right amount of ambient light. These light fixtures are actually embedded in the ceiling, so they are not particularly easy to clean. Recessed lights work well when used in the bedroom

Fluorescent lights: These are your regular ceiling fixtures generally seen in commercial settings. These stark lights are rectangular with the tube light fixed inside a metallic frame which may or may not be enclosed in an acrylic cover. While not suitable for the living room or even the bedroom, these Spartan lights can be used in the laundry room or even the basement.

Down lights: Much like the pendant lights; these are usually single bulb fixtures that are used to shine light on a specific section of the room.

A lighted ceiling fan: These are multi purpose ceiling light fixtures that combine the functionality of a light as well as a fan. The design will usually comprise of a four or five blade fan with a small 4 or 5 bulb light fixture in the center. While these look very classy and are available in a myriad of finishes, they can become noisy towards the end of their life and are known to be dust magnets.

The light in a room can have a bearing on your mood and how comfortable you feel in space. So, it is imperative to choose the right ceiling light fixtures for your home that lend it a cozy feel and enhance the aesthetic potential of your house.

Kitchen Ceiling Lighting - Its Proper Use And Purposes

In choosing the right kitchen ceiling lighting fixtures, there are some important matters to consider. One of these is the amount of brightness they will disperse off a certain part or the entire kitchen.

The most common mistake that people do is to have a lone kitchen ceiling lighting mounted with centralized light dispersal scheme. This is not a good idea, as not all household tasks done in the kitchen require the same amount of brightness. For instance, you may not need the same brightness when you are washing as you do when chopping vegetables. Or you may not need the same illumination level when you are serving the dishes as you do when cooking the meal.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

So, the bottom line is, in the kitchen, you have to have a certain kitchen lighting fixture installed on a certain portion of the kitchen for a specific brightness level. You have to have different kitchen lighting fixture installed over the island, or countertop and different above the meal table, and maybe another one over the kitchen sink area.

If the room has a certain type of kitchen ceiling lighting installed with the purpose of providing centralized brightness, it must be used exactly for that specific purpose. The lights that it diffuses can be used when no certain amount of brightness is needed in the kitchen, like when doing the dishes, or wiping the countertops. Or it can be used simply to enhance the design of the kitchen.

It is a matter of fact that most of the time kitchen lighting fixtures fixed above the ceiling are mounted mainly for aesthetics purposes. Though they serve the true functional purpose, they are great to finish off the entire design of a kitchen. Ceiling light fixtures are available in different styles and designs, so there are different options for your kitchen. But as an addition to the first mentioned aspect to consider when choosing the right kitchen ceiling lighting, you would have to be very careful when shopping.

With the proliferating number of ceiling light fixtures available in various showrooms, you may be confused as to what you shall pick. Not only shall you have to consider the entire design of the kitchen, but the amount of space the fixture would have to take up. Surely, you don't suppose that a big chandelier would be the right choice if your kitchen is considerably small. In the same manner, you would not want it if the light fixture is a small, round type if you got bigger-spaced kitchen.

When it comes to kitchen ceiling lighting fixture, make sure you don't shortcut any needed requirements to ensure you don't compromise the appearance of the room. Considerably as important, don't put quality of the product if you want real savings. Real savings are those ceiling lighting fixtures that are guaranteed to last very long years with the kitchen. So, take your time to search for the right ones if you don't want regrets in the end.
