Fixing That Annoying Blinking Fluorescent Light

So now its time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. There are some very important guidelines to follow when doing electrical work:

-MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF AND THERE IS NO CHANCE OF IT ACCIDENTALLY BEING TURNED ON WHILE WORKING ON IT.
-Have all the materials you will need for your project. There is nothing worse than being half way in your project to find out you don't have everything you need.
-Have the right tool for the job your doing

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

Following our safety guide we need to turn the power off to the light. You can just turn the switch off to the light and that will remove power, but we need to make sure nobody will accidentally turn it on when your working on it. So find your fuse box or circuit panel and shut the breaker off as well. Look for breaker tags such as gen lighting, or lighting.

Fixing That Annoying Blinking Fluorescent Light

Now that we know we are safe to work on the fluorescent light here are the tools you will need:

-A fiberglass ladder (make sure it is fiberglass when working with electricity because fiberglass does not conduct electricity.)
-Lineman pliers
-Nut driver
-Wire strippers
-Voltage tester

Now that we have our tools we need to rule out some simple fixes. I have been on calls that I felt so bad charging a customer for something they easily could have done themselves. Number one thing to do is replace the bulb. Keep in mind there are two types most commonly found and they are T-12 and T-8. The T-12 is a fat tube and a T-8 is thin in circumference, that's the easiest way to figure out what it is. If your still not sure remove the bulb and look at the end of the tube and there will be a model number on it with either T-12 of T-8 in or around that area.

Ok, so we changed the bulb and it's not the fix. The problem most likely lies in the ballast. By removing the center cover we can access the ballast, you should see wire colors of black, red, blue, yellow, white and green. Before you remove anything you need to make sure you have the right type of ballast. Make sure the model numbers are the same and the type of ballast is the same. All newer fixtures use electronic ballasts, while older models might use rapid start, and magnetic type ballasts as some examples. We know we have the right ballast so what I do before I even remove the ballast is take the black and white wire from the ceiling box and remove it from the ballast without touching the bare copper and test them with your voltage tester to make absolute sure they are dead, cap each one with a wire nut, these wires are what give power to the ballast.

Look at the colors and where there connected to. I then cut the wires with my linesmans pliers after the wire nut. I do this because when you put the new ballast in it will have the same colored leads as the old one, so you can use it to help you reconnect the colors of wires to the light. After you cut the wires remove the ballast with your nut driver making sure not to lose that nut you will need it later!!! CAUTION: The ballast may be hot to the touch, put some gloves on or use a rag when handling the ballast. Install the new ballast by aligning it into the slots and the hole where the nut was. Simply fasten the nut down and the ballast should now be secured to the fixture. Now connect blue to blue, red to red, yellow to yellow using orange wire nuts. Next hook up the black wire being careful because this is your "HOT" wire to the black and the white to the white. One thing you need to do when connecting the wires is to make sure that you twist your wires together, do not just rely on the wire nut. If you do not twist your wires it could cause a fire by not having a good connection.

Place the cover back on the fixture, put some new lamps in and your done.

Turn the breaker back on at the panel, turn the switch on and let there be light. Now the bragging starts.

Winter Lighting

It's coming round to that time of year again when winter hits and the days get shorter. The natural sunlight only lasts until about 6 o clock so inside lights have to be switched on earlier. When this time of year arrives the best way to save money and the environment is to invest in some low energy bulbs - you can get these to fit most styles of lamps.

Low energy bulbs are a great way of achieving soft, diffused lighting and are perfect for bedside lamps. They can provide enough light so you can read a book and prevent you from having to put up with the traditional light bulb that can sometimes be far too bright. Low energy bulbs look best in lamps that have a partially sheer shade. This is because the pattern on the shade can be lit up and reflected around the room to give the room some personality.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

In the colder months it is comforting to have lights that make you feel warmer. To achieve that cosy feel invest in some autumnal themed lamp shades in colours such as orange, deep red and chocolate. To instantly light up a room floor standing lights can really make a room when placed next to a sofa, chair or in the corner of a lounge.

Floor standing touch lamps provide a good amount of light with the majority of light being directed towards the ceiling so that the room can be attractively lit. They are also ideal if you want to hide wires as the lamp usually is turned off by touch so there's no need to be rooting for the off switch!

Whilst you are snuggling up on the sofa with a hot drink it can be a real treat to invest in some fancy lights. Why not buy some authentic looking hanging lanterns to hang outside your home to light up the dark nights. Or if your preference is more contemporary there are various LED fairy lights that come in a range of colours. These look brilliant when draped over a tree that has lost its leaves and help add character to a garden.

If you are on the hunt for some winter lighting then remember to consider both indoor and outdoor lighting options. Think about colours and the atmosphere you want to create in a room.

Three Types of Lighting for Room Remodeling

When remodeling a room, choosing the correct lighting is one of the most important considerations. Proper lighting sets the atmosphere of the room, creates a particular mood, or provides accent to an architectural style. Lighting also accentuates the good aspects of a room or disguises a room's shortcomings.

There are three main types of lighting, general, task, and accent. Each has its own specific uses, depending on a room's needs.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

General Lighting

Three Types of Lighting for Room Remodeling

General lighting is sometimes called ambient lighting, and is the foundation of any room's lighting scheme. It is what provides the overall illumination of a room, enabling the occupants to be able to walk around the room easily and safely.

There are many types of general lighting, such as chandeliers, wall or ceiling fixtures, and recessed or track lighting.

Task Lighting

Task lighting allows a room's occupants to perform specific activities such as writing, reading, dressing, or cooking, depending upon the room being addressed. There are a number of possibilities when it comes to task lighting, such as pendant lights, portable lamps, as well as recessed or track lighting.

The important consideration for task lighting is that it must be bright enough to prevent eyestrain without causing glare or distracting shadows.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is designed to add drama to a room through the creation of visual interest. It can be used to spotlight paintings, plants, sculptures, or to highlight an unusual wall texture or drapery. Accent lighting generally focuses at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general light in the room, and is usually provided by recessed, track, or wall mounted lighting.

Using the three types of light dramatically improves the overall look and feel of a room, and should be one of the most carefully considered parts of any remodeling plan.

Drawing a Residential Electrical Plan

An electrical plan is a plan view similar to the floor plan in that all the walls, doors, and windows are shown along with the electrical symbols that describe service to the house. It also includes what is known as a legend which defines what each symbol represents.

There are several considerations that have to be made when drawing an electrical plan for a house. They are as follows:

The Meter and Service Box

The electrical meter is always on the exterior of the home. This is the location where power enters the house into the circuit box. The circuit box is located no more than twelve feet away from where the power enters the homes. From this location electricity is distributed to the individual rooms. The circuit box is usually located in a service area of a home like the utility room or kitchen. If the home has a basement, this is usually the preferred location for it to be placed.

Light Fixtures, Light Switches, and Receptacles

Light fixtures are usually placed in the middle of a room to allow even lighting throughout. Sometimes these are included in special fixtures like ceiling fans. When a fixture is placed in a large closet, it is usually mounted so that it is at least three feet from where the clothing is hung to insure against a fire from its heat. Exterior lighting should be waterproof in some way to eliminate the possibility of electrical short.

The light switches almost always are mounted next to a room entrance for convenience. When switching an exterior light, these are usually located inside near the exterior lights location.

Receptacles, also known as outlets are usually spaced every six feet in a room. This is to make sure that electrical cords do not have to be stretched far from the appliance they are powering. Some times a homeowner requests that the top half of a receptacle be controlled by a light switch to make turning off lamps simpler. Exterior receptacles and those inside the house within six feet of a water source like a sink are ground fault interrupt. This is to eliminate possible shock if shorted by water.

All of these are one hundred and twenty volt with a few exceptions and the amperage varies.

Smoke Detectors

These are required by code for fire safety. The must be located in each individual bedroom and also near each exit from the home. These are usually battery powered so that even if the power is out, they will still function.

Wiring Connections

These are usually drawn using a arched dashed line showing which switch controls what light or receptacle.

There are many more considerations like two twenty volt power for appliances such as the stove or electrical clothes dryer. You may also place special fixtures like phone jacks and cable tv connections on this plan.

Interesting Ways to Light Up Your Hallway

Dimly lit hallways are a major pain to walk through as they give a depressing look to the place. It becomes a hard task to walk through them at night, especially for younger members of the family who may view this dim and gloomy area as something to be avoided.

If one does not really have that artistic and aesthetic sense to undertake a creative overhauling of the hallway, merely installing lighting fixtures can make this area look bright, cheerful and inviting. There are lots of different types of lighting that can be installed to make the hallway more attractive and welcoming which is very important as this is the first place that visitors to your house tend to notice as they enter. This area sets the tone for the rest of your house.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

Following are the different ways to be kept in mind through which proper lighting up of your hallway can be achieved:

Interesting Ways to Light Up Your Hallway

Lighting complementary to the paint of the walls: While installing small lighting fixtures in different shapes and sizes, it is important to make sure that they go well with the colour that the wall of your hallway is painted in. Dark coloured walls do not go well with dim lighting as it gives a dingy look to the hallway. If the walls have been painted in a dark colour, extremely bright lights are required that can counter the darkness of the paints and brighten up the hallway. If the walls have been painted in pale and light colours, almost any kind of light can be used that are adequate to light up the hallway and give it a warm look. Yellow coloured lights give a soothing and relaxed look to your hallway. A mix and match of different coloured lights can also be done to achieve an artistic effect.

Natural Lighting: Most people may think that a window in the hallway provides great natural lighting but people with experience of this type know better. At certain times of the day when the sun is at its peak, there is extremely bright light outside but as it enters the hallway, a glare is created which actually makes your hallway dim. So, it is best not to depend too much on natural light for narrow, confined spaces like the hallway. If a window exists, it should be covered up by blinds or suitable curtains and one should concentrate on providing lighting through internal sources for achieving the best results.

Spotlights: Spotlights can be used creatively at various places in the hallway if family photographs or paintings have been put up on the walls. The spotlights help to focus the attention on one particular object which lends it an almost ethereal look. The spotlights can be experimented by using coloured ones. This will beautify and give an enchanting look to the object in focus. It lights up the hallway and gives it a strong visual appeal.

Track Lighting: Track lighting can be done throughout the hallway to make it look bigger and more open. It makes this area look bright and cheerful. Another way to make track lighting look even more pleasing is by covering the entire ceiling with a continuous mirror and then installing track lights into the ceiling. This will double brighten up the hallway and create a dazzling effect for the person walking through.
