Fixing Lights

Ever think about changing the lighting in you home? Recessed lighting fixtures can add expertly placed light in your home and take up no room at all; freeing your spaces up for other things!

Don't worry, just because your home wasn't built with recessed lighting fixtures already in place doesn't mean you can't add them now. There are all sorts of kits and "how too" info to help you add these lights after the fact.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

Take your kitchen for example. Generally you have one central light, and maybe one over the sink. But you have to see to cut and read that old recipe of Grandma's that is handwritten on that old paper. The light in the kitchen needs to be bright, but not cause glare and create shadows that will interfere with what you are doing. Lighting recessed into the ceiling can do all that for you. Just some careful calculations and you can get all the lighting you require.

Fixing Lights

Offices are another space that can really benefit from recessed lighting fixtures. You will need task lighting, like in the kitchen, for over your work space. Again, you don't want glare off the pages you are reading or the computer screen. And you don't want your own shadow to block your light. You might also have a lovely painting on one wall that would be enhanced by some eyeball lighting - helping to make that a focal point in the room. On the other wall there may be a beautiful bookcase, covered in both written treasures and perhaps memorabilia. A nice wall washing effect here can really bathe the space in the proper light.

What ever the room, recessed lighting fixtures can be the solution you were looking for. Just watch out for current ceiling joists if you are cutting into a pre-existing ceiling. There is nothing you can't do with these lights to improve the space at hand.

How to Layout Recessed Lighting

One of the most important principles to understand when designing a recessed lighting layout is beam angle. In recessed cans, the light is produced in the shape of a cone. You picture the light starting as a point at the light fixture and forming a circle on the floor. The beam angle is the angle of this light out of the bulb. For example a 60-degree beam angle will produce a circle of light about 9 feet across on the floor if the fixture is 8 feet off the floor. See a

That is just one part of the formula. That circle of light we now have on the floor is not all the same intensity. About five and a half feet of that circle is good intense light while the remainder is spill over and diminishes as it gets further from the center. This is very important to understand. With this information, you can overlap the spill over light so that you end up with a nice even light pattern over the entire area you are trying to illuminate. Something to remember when you are planning this out is something called the work plane. This is an area about 30" above the floor. It is an area where most tasks take place.

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

The work plane is important because as the distance between the light fixture and the surface to be lit decreases, so does that circle we spoke about. In a living room or den, designing the lighting plan so that we have even light on the floor is fine. In a kitchen though, this work plane becomes far more critical. This is why in a kitchen, keeping recessed lights about 4 feet apart, creates a pattern that is even on the work plane with the intense portion of the circle.

How to Layout Recessed Lighting

There are some other things besides the bulb and the can that shape the light pattern. The finish trim on recessed lights can vary the pattern of light. A wall washer creates a half cone that can be directed at a wall or fireplace. A pin spot trim can direct the light in a very narrow beam to light a small object.

During the holiday season (and other times, if you're like me), it's nice to decorate your windows with sparkling lights, letting the whole world know that it's time for a celebration. But how do you choose lights? How do you put them up so they don't fall down? And how can you get them to blend in with your interior and exterior design?

What types of lights are available for outlining my windows?

Ceiling Fixture Lighting

Almost any type of traditional Christmas light can be used to outline a window any time of year. Here are some suggestions with their advantages:

Be cautious when using twinkle and chasing lights, find a balance between flash and crazy. You might consider using a Christmas light controller to add some movement to your C7/C9 display.

How do I attach my lights to the window?

There are two things you'll discover when you're anchoring lights: length may be a problem, and tape will not hold them. Whether you're putting lights up inside or outside your windows, there are solutions to this. Rope lights can usually be cut to within 18 inches of the length you want, and they look great outlining windows. They're easy to attach with plastic clips made for use with rope lights that screw on or nail onto your surface. Stong adhesive can be an option in some applications.

Mini lights and C7/C9 light strings can both be purchased to be close to a specific length. These lights to up easily with adhesive clips, which use adhesive tape and stick well. Be sure to test whatever surface you apply an adhesive to make sure its finish will hold.

Decorating Style Tips

While some people think Christmas lights are only multicolored, you have many options for your windows. White lights and blue lights both lend a very elegant touch, especially when you have lots of snow outside. White lights can be used year round too, on your back porch to lend a magical air or indoors to decorate special rooms. (You can also use multicolored lights all year: I like to hang lights up in my kids' bedrooms around the ceiling instead of using a nightlight.) Red lights are great for Valentines and don't forget red, white, and blue for the entire summer; it's great for every holiday from Memorial Day to Independence Day to Labor Day. Every Holiday seems to have a special combination. So do sports teams - celebrate the next Superbowl with the colors of your favorite team.

Coordinate your window lighting with other decorations in your home. For instance, if you're doing a lot with holly, you could do red and green lights only. If you're using a White Christmas theme, then obviously clear lights are the choice. If you're going to have a Scottish theme with plaids, match your light colors to the plaid you're using. Take a step back and coordinate your colors and your room will have a truly pulled together look.
